Big guns to miss Christie sevens

NAIROBI, October 24 – Kenya’s top sevens rugby players will not be on show during this weekend’s Christie Sevens but plenty of drama is still expected when the tourney takes place at the Rugby Football Union of East Africa (RFUEA) grounds.

Mwamba head into this weekend’s tournament without the services of Humphrey Khayange, Collins Injera, Lavin Asego and Horace Otieno who have been called up to the national team for the Africa Zone Rugby World Cup qualifiers in Tunisia.

The top seeds will have to rely on George Mbaye, Chris Asego and Sidney Nderitu and are in Pool A together with University of Nairobi’s Mean Machine, Kenya College of Accountancy (KCA) and Methodist University.

The ever improving Strathmore University are second seeds by virtue of reaching the main cup final of the Driftwood Sevens where they were thrashed by Mwamba 46-0.

The team which is coached by former international winger Mitch Ocholla will want to erase memories of that chilling scoreline and prove a point against Impala, Daystar and Moi Universities.

Impala will be seeking revenge against Strathmore who upset the Ngong Road side 10-5 in the Driftwood quarters especially since it was masterminded by Ocholla who cut his teeth at Impala.

Nakuru who went as far as the main quarters last weekend should fancy their chances this time round with Cyprian Shimenga and Vincent Mose in their ranks but they will have to make it through Driftwood plate finalists Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB), Kenyatta University Blak Blad and Catholic University.

Kenya Harlequins have not had the best of circuits and the legendary club which has produced greats like Sammy Khakame and Gordon Anampiu would want to make a mark on their home turf.

The 2006 champions who are in Pool D have their own current set of stellar reputations in the likes of speedsters Allan Makaka, Leon Adogo, Amos Agiro, Peter Abuoga and David Mogere.

Nondies who are without national players Biko Adema and Ben Nyambu headline the same pool with United States International University (USIU)  and Nazarene making up numbers.

Pool A: Mwamba, Mean Machine, KCA, Methodist
Pool B: Strathmore, Impala, Daystar, Moi University
Pool C: Nakuru, KCB, Blak Blad, Catholic
Pool D: Nondies, Quins, USIU, Nazarene
