Only baby survives grisly road crash

NAIROBI, August 28 – Five people were killed in a ghastly road accident that occurred in Voi on Thursday morning, in which only an infant survived.

The accident involved a saloon car and a truck that were headed in opposite directions.

Reports indicate that the saloon car was trying to overtake another vehicle when it collided head on with the oncoming lorry.

“It was a very bad accident, the five people were killed on the spot but a one-year-old baby was lucky to have survived,” a police officer based at the Coast Provincial headquarters said.

He said bodies of those killed were taken to the Voi district hospital mortuary.

The accident occurred at a black spot near Manyani, a few kilometres from Voi town.

Police said that at least four accidents are reported at the black spot every week and have now warned motorists to be cautious.

Traffic Commandant Aggrey Adoli said they are concerned about the increased accidents on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

Adoli said many of the accidents were a result of motorists speeding and flouting other traffic regulations.

“We are now conducting operations in all parts of the country targeting motorists, who do not comply with the traffic regulations,” he said.

Adoli warned that vehicles found to be unroadworthy would not be allowed to operate on public roads.

He said public service vehicles were notorious for flouting traffic rules.
