NAIROBI August 30th – Baldev Chager successfully defended his Nanyuki Rally title Saturday after winning the KCB Easy Pay Loans Rally at Ol-Pejeta conservancy.
The victory handed him a seventh Kenya National Rally Championship (KNRC) career title win and was his fourth victory in Nanyuki.
It was a battle royale for Charger against his Triton Sport team mate Lee Rose who led the rally into the latter stages only to retire 12km into the last stage of the competition with a fuel pump failure.
Behind Chager was the sibling rivalry that saw Oilibya-sponsored Anwar brothers Asad and Azar taking the second and third slot respectively.
Current national champion Carl Tundo had a torrid rally after battling with a driveshaft complication which dogged his ambition to scoop the top honours.
Tundo said: “I’m happy with 5th overall slot after a rather troublesome drive. We broke our drive shaft at the very first corner of the first stage and this made it very impossible to fight Lee and Tundo."
The event claimed some of the front-runners including Cavenagh and Ugandan Emma Katto.
Cavenagh retired after he rolled the Mitsubishi EVO 8 at the second run of the Bosia-Dam stage while Katto grappled with serious overheating problems on CS4 Ndovu-Newcastle stage. He rolled while trying to make up time. Anthony Nielsen navigated by Michael Ogwapit finished 14th after breaking a rear railing arm.
In the two wheel drive, it was a different drive for the class’s leader Charles Hinga after finishing 3rd in that category that was won by Leornado Varese navigated by Kigondu Kareithi. In second place was Leamy Karienye.
