, Agriculture Minister William Ruto on Wednesday took a bold step when he revoked licenses of 16 sugar exporters whom he accused of robbing the exchequer billions of shillings through dubious deals.
The move is highly welcomed especially at this time when the country is facing food shortages and soaring food prices. The Minister should move quickly and launch investigations into these unscrupulous traders so that they can face the law for their misdeeds.
The government should also move to seal loopholes in the country’s export and import laws so as to check on excesses by traders and protect consumers.
We hope the move shall eliminate market distortions and streamline the marketing of local and legally imported sugar for the benefit of the economy and consumers.
