I\u2019m not exactly the most organized person in the world (and if you\u2019ve seen my closet on one of those \u2018goodness me, I have nothing to wear\u2019 days, you would know what I mean) but I do enjoy a beautifully arranged space where everything has its own home.<\/p>\n
I can\u2019t explain why but the sight of a perfectly filed herbal tea drawer or an array of office folders immaculately colour coded makes my heart soar. I’m not kidding, my heart literally jumps out of my\u00a0chest, spreads its little wings, leaps into the sky and flies like a happy eagle.<\/p>\n

A couple of weeks ago, I was introduced to the legendary Marie Kondo who\u2019s best selling book \u2018The Life-Changing Magic\u00a0of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing\u2019<\/em> has been published in over 40 regions and countries. As a professional organizing consultant, she has dedicated\u00a0a good chunk of her life to teaching people the art and benefits of decluttering and organizing your space.<\/p>\n After watching a few YouTube videos of women sharing their testimonies on how the book transformed their lives (I haven\u2019t managed to get my hands on it yet but would love to), I decided to give it a try.<\/p>\n Kondo’s\u00a0main mantra lies in the premise that you should only keep things that spark joy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Now I may not have necessarily followed everything the book says down to a T, but from the few spaces in my home that I decided to declutter and organize based on this simple premise, I was shocked to see how much I was ready to let go of.<\/p>\n I have no explanation for the amount of expired makeup I held onto or number of shoes that were gathering dust in the hopes that one day I\u2019ll miraculously go down one size or gifted perfumes that I actually never liked\u00a0but held onto because who doesn\u2019t love a good perfume collection? It was ridiculous just how much stuff was occupying space in my home and yet didn\u2019t do anything for me. Absolutely nothing.<\/p>\n What I\u2019ve learnt from my rudimentary adoption of the KonMari Method of tidying up\u00a0is that I deserve to only have things that I absolutely love in my home. And that letting go of items I no longer cared for\u00a0only provides me with room to get the things I actually love.<\/p>\n I\u2019ve also realized that the process of putting my makeup on or selecting\u00a0a pair of shoes to wear or picking out my handbag is much easier because I\u2019m not bombarded with a myriad of choice that doesn\u2019t actually appeal to me anymore.<\/p>\n It\u2019s easier to get ready, my house doesn\u2019t look as cluttered any more and I get to hold onto things that truly spark joy. What\u2019s not to love about that?<\/p>\n I can\u2019t wait to get my hands on her book and really delve into the KonMari Method of organising. If you have a moment to spare this evening or this weekend, I urge to go through your closet or perhaps makeup, maybe even your entire home, and purge the things that no longer spark joy.<\/p>\n In fact, how about you start by treating yourself to Kondo’s book and then you’ll really see for yourself how\u00a0decluttering can change your life!
