Madafu, Coastal Sengenya and Gonda dances as First Lady Rachel Ruto hosts Laura Mattarella, the First Lady of The Republic of Italy

First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto together with Laura Mattarella, the First Lady of The Republic of Italy, this afternoon visited the Bomas of Kenya for a cultural experience, aimed at promoting the rich Kenyan culture as a niche tourism product. H.E. Laura is in Kenya, accompanying the Italian President, Sergio Mattarella on a 4-day official visit.

Bomas of Kenya is Kenya’s leading cultural village which was built using traditional specifications of myriad Kenyan tribes; through architecture, crafts, music and dance. It was started by the Government of Kenya in 1971 as a wholly owned subsidiary of the Kenya Tourist Development Cooperation (KTDC).

It was established with the Mandate to Preserve and Promote the Rich & Diverse Cultures of various ethnic communities of Kenya and to act as a Tourism Attraction Centre.

The two First Ladies got to experience the delightful sounds and movements of Kenya through the cultural performances by the Bomas Harambee dancers. The troupe’s repertoire consists of over 50 dances from different ethnic communities.

Everyday at Bomas of Kenya, with live percussion, string and wind instruments, and diverse, authentic and energetic dancing, Bomas Harambee Dancers takes you on an enchanting journey through Kenya, this according to their spokesman.

The Bomas Harambee Dancers resident dance troupe was founded in 1973 and named in honor of the First President’s call for unity and cooperation in building the Kenyan Nation. Four decades later, the troupe is still active and its mission is to preserve music and dance traditions of various ethnic communities of Kenya and to showcase them at the international arena.
