In Pictures: Polo fans turn up for the Davies Cup 2022 Tournament

Polo, often referred to as the sport of kings & for centuries its drawn royalty to its ranks, is one of the few sporting events where the style on the sidelines is watched as much as the tournament itself.

On Saturday, 8th and Sunday 9th January 2022, Nairobi Polo family and fans met at The Nairobi Polo Club for two days of sporting action, food, drinks, music and good vibes at this year’s Davies Cup Polo Tournament, sponsored by Tusker Malt Lager, EABL’s first premium brand 100% Malt Brewed. The perfect weather and vibrant spectators on both days set the stage for a weekend of intricate, intriguing and enticing entertainment and good company with amazing horsepower on the field.

Founded in 1907 and based in the heart of Nairobi’s heaving metropolis, Nairobi Polo Club is the oldest polo club in East Africa. With two full-size pitches and a well-appointed club house, it offers the ambiance and venue for corporate hospitality and entertainment. Known for its vibrant atmosphere and an illustrious list of both playing and social members, it hosts some of the most prestigious events in the playing and social calendar.

The Most Valuable Player award of the tournament went to Team Tusker Malt stalwart Hiromi Nzomo, who was as gracious in victory as she was in play. Nzomo explained that her team’s win was no individual fete, and that it came down to the team as a unit, with everyone backing each other up to secure a win at the Davis Cup finals.

Playing off handicap 0 and Team Tusker Malt’s backbone, Nzomo added that it was a special privilege to play alongside her father, Nairobi Polo Club Chairman Raphael Nzomo. Said Hiromi Nzomo: “The team worked together perfectly, the grounds were in great condition, the sponsors came through strongly and the organisation was a well-oiled machine. Overall, I would call it a successful Davis Cup.”

The polo action continues throughout the remaining weekends of January (15-16th , 22- 23 rd, 29- 30th), with the next tournament being the Maria Bencivenga Memorial tournament, taking place on the weekend of January 15th, at the Nairobi Polo Club grounds, presented by Tusker Malt Lager. The grand finale of the Polo season is on the 29th- 30th January weekend.
