It is safe to say that we have all missed the simple joys of being outdoors, socialising and dining with family and friends at your favourite restaurant. The way we eat, what we eat and most importantly where we eat has drastically changed as result of COVID-19.
If your first missed experience is a juicy rib eye steak or tender sirloin steak, we did some digging into Nairobi’s steakhouses to ensure that you do not have to sit through a substandard chop again… not after spending three months in lockdown.
Cosy, authentic and unassuming cannot fully describe the hidden gem that is Sierra Bar and Grill located on the 3rd and 4th floor of Yaya Centre.
The main dining room is utterly sophisticated and screams date night with warm amber lighting, wooden floors, mirrors and timeless art pieces by David Ballam.
To preserve social distancing and heed to guidelines, Sierra’s dining space has been spaced out to ensure that guests are far apart from each other, menus sanitised after each use and soon to be an online menu.
Whether you choose to sit in the main dining area or at the terrace, these measures ensure that you feel comfortable and that your experience is safe.
Nothing says a rich steak like a rich history, and Sierra is bursting with both. The restaurant sources the beef from their Marania farm in Timau where they have been breeding Angus and Angus crosses for over 50 years. They then age the beef for a minimum of 14 days and a maximum of 28 days before cutting the steaks for the restaurant. We will delve into this interesting process another day.
The real magic of Sierra lies in its melt-in-your-mouth, juicy steaks ranging from their rib eye to fillet to sirloin steak topped with flawless hospitality that will make your fine dining experience truly unforgettable.
Properly aged, textured, tender rib eye steak with a side of french-fries. Every bite is bold and flavourful without needing anything else but the mushroom sauce and the coleslaw on the side are still very welcome.
Sierra has an impressive wine collection because great wine must be accompanied by even better food.
Steak aside, Sierra cooks up some fine burgers. We recommend you have their famous wagyu burger not only for its popularity but because it is outrageous in the way you want a meaty, juicy burger to be.
There is a very good chance that this burger will overwhelm you.
If you do have room for dessert after the generous steak portions, try their homemade ice-cream from their dessert menu.
Doors open daily at noon, prepare to be greeted by a warm and welcoming service staff, you can literally feel the smiles through their masks.
Sierra gave us the best possible version of steak eating, we’re emotional thinking about it.
