15 Healthy foods that can sabotage your weight loss program

foods

The doctor has told you to lose some kilos because your health is at risk or you just feel like losing a few kilos will do you some good. So you embark on a “eating clean journey” but the damn weight is just not coming off! And instead the kilos just keep creeping in. Ugh! So disheartening!

Well, as much as you’re trying to eat clean and feel that it is so unfair that you are not losing any weight, you need to know that some of these healthy foods, either in their organic state or with some add-ons here and there, are packed with more  calories than necessary therefore have to be consumed in moderation.

Here are some of those culprit foods.

#1 Avocado

As much as avocados are heart-healthy and packed with healthy goodness, they are also high in fat and packed with calories. You may just want to watch how much avocado you eat.

#2 Red Wine

Red wine reduces your risk of heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease and certain types of cancers but  it has to be consumed in moderation otherwise, your waistline will not escape the extra pounds as wine contains a lot of calories.

#3 Nuts

Nuts are packed with heart healthy omega-3 fatty acids, protein, vitamin E and fiber but they are also very high in calories so they have to be consumed in moderation.

#4 Dried Fruit

A cup of fresh grapes contains about 60 calories while a cup of raisins contain about 460 calories. Dried fruits are just fruits without any water content which means that they contain 5-8 times more calories than fresh fruit.

#5 Chocolate

An ounce of dark chocolate contains about 155 calories and 9 grams of fat. Snacking on a square or two of dark chocolate that contains a high percentage cacao (contains less sugar) would be more ideal.

#6 Smoothies

Smoothies made with ingredients like fruits and vegetables only are ok. But when you add ingredients like peanut butter, chocolate , flavored syrups and frozen or flavored yogurt your waistline will be the recipient of the extra empty calories.

#7 Yogurt

Yogurt that contains dried fruits is packed with calories like you won’t believe. You would benefit more by consuming plain yoghurt with fresh fruit added for sweetness.

#8 Sushi

Special sushi rolls come with high calorie ingredients like cream cheese, spicy mayo, tempura-battered shrimp and white rice which spell E.X.T.R.A C.A.L.O.R.I.E.S. Sashimi, brown rice sushi or simple rolls without extra ingredients would be a better sushi option.

#9 Veggie burgers

It is true that veggie burgers contain less fat and cholesterol than meat burgers. The tricky part as with all burgers, is when you have to add the cheese, ketchup and mayo to make your burger well…a burger and a tasty one at that.

#10 Tofu

As much as Tofu is super healthy, it is packed with calcium, iron and protein-it sponges up the oil you are cooking with which turns your healthy tofu into a fatty meal.

#11 Salad

Salads are always a healthier option. But when the add ons like shredded cheese, croutons, nuts dipped in candy, creamy dressings land on your salad, it becomes the calorific option. Just go easy on the add ons.

#12 Omelet

An Omelet loaded with cheeses and fatty meats ceases to be the fantastic, healthy, protein and vitamin D filled breakfast meal and instead becomes a waist-widener. Fill your omelets with vegetables instead.

#13 Whole wheat bread

The only whole wheat bread you should trust is that which is made from actual whole grains because otherwise, your “whole wheat bread” is just as processed as white bread which digests very easily and spikes your blood sugar super fast!

#14 Whole milk

Milk is really good for your health as it is packed with vitamins A and D, protein, and calcium. However, if you are trying to lose some weight, whole milk is really not your friend as a cup of whole milk will set you back nearly 150 calories and about 9 grams of fat.

#15 Energy bar

Energy bars are just sugar, carbs and Glycemic Index overload. When you eat one, your blood sugar will go UP and then DOWN leaving you hungrier, grumpier and with major cravings.
