CoronaVirus: Five Ways to Protect Yourself

Coronavirus, a respiratory illness with flu-like symptoms; fever, headache, dry cough, fatigue and shortness of breath is now a public health emergency of global concern that has killed more than 3,000 people and infected more than 88,000 worldwide.

According to the World Health Organisation, the virus spreads like the flu. Whenever someone with the virus coughs or exhales, they release droplets of infected fluid that can land on nearby surfaces like desks and can infect another person who comes into contact.

With that in mind here are 5 ways you can take care of your health and protect yourself from infection.

1.Practice Hand Hygiene

Wash your hands thoroughly, especially if you have been to a public place, after going to the bathroom, before eating, after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing with soap and water for more than 20 seconds.

If soap and water is not readily available, use a sanitizer that has at least 60% alcohol content to kill viruses that may be on your hands.

2. Avoid touching surfaces in public areas

Avoid touching surfaces in public areas if you do not have to like handrails and lift buttons.

Regularly clean and sanitise surfaces you touch often like your work station, keyboards, telephones, counter-tops and doorknobs.

3.Avoid nose, face and mouth contact with unwashed hands

Avoid touching your face; nose, eyes and mouth with unwashed hands because that is how the virus could get into your body.

4. Practice respiratory Hygiene

Catch your cough and sneeze with the crook of your elbow or with disposable tissue. The virus is spread via droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes so always make sure you cover your mouth.

5. Stay away or maintain distance from sick people

Stay away or maintain distance from someone who is coughing or sneezing to avoid breathing in liquid droplets that could get the virus into your body.
