Surviving Cardi B

We never thought we’d see the day Americas new realistic sweetheart would be in a scandal pertaining drugs, robbery and sex. Here we are. Here we are surviving Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar (Cardi B). We know the internet never forgets, but to hear it on a three year old Instagram live chat incriminating herself? who could have seen that coming.

“I had to go strip, I had to go, ‘Oh yeah, you want to f*ck me? Yeah, yeah, yeah, let’s go to this hotel,’ and I drugged n***as up, and I robbed them,” she says in the video. “That’s what I used to do. Nothing was motherf*cking handed to me” she said.  Praised for being real and authentic, a breath of fresh air to the clean cut industry that is becoming stale. #SurvivngCardiB might actually be a true reflection of not only herself but the times women in this society are living in.

Luring men into hotel rooms and drugging them for their money. A sad reality of many women in todays society, this idea of doing what she/we had to do to “survive.” A sad yet constant story. This is an extreme story but in reality, it doesn’t even have to be finessing to that extent, it is finessing nonetheless. “Finessing”, this is something we all know too well. Where is the line though? where is the double standard?

No man has come forward to these claims. In fact only Cardi B put them out there. In an era of #Metoo, if the tables were turned women, men the church and children would be screaming foul play. When learning about this claim you wonder… who was drugged? who was robbed? and why are we shocked but not shook?

“All I can do now is be a better me for myself my family and my future,” she wrote on a recent Instagram post. A female Hip-Hop artist in a field where we hear all to often about gang affiliation, drugs, sex, murder… The list could go on. Some glorified some a simple reality of their upbringing. Do we continue to look the other way when these artists have “changed”?

Clearly there’s so many questions to pose here. The loudest question being, if a man admitted to doing the same would we react different?
