Signs you need to up Your Potassium intake

Potassium

This is probably one thing that most people don’t know or have probably never cared to know; Hypokalaemia (deficiency of potassium in the bloodstream) is a real condition!

Weakness, fatigue, cramping in arm or leg muscles, tingling or numbness, Nausea or Vomiting, abdominal cramping, bloating, constipation , heart palpitations, irritability among others are just some of the symptoms that one may experience in case of low potassium levels in the body.

Potassium, just like Sodium, Magnesium and Calcium is an electrolyte which is required by our bodies for all our muscles (including the heart) to work effectively.

Electrolytes on the other hand are those minerals that are found in body tissues and in blood that are in form of dissolved salts. Their main role in the body  is to regulate our nerve and muscle function, our body’s hydration, blood PH, blood pressure and rebuilding damaged tissues.

Potassium is an essential nutrient that works by maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance in the body.

Some more Electrolytes facts:

*Electrolytes are vital for the normal functioning of the human body.

*The symptoms of electrolyte imbalance can include twitching, weakness and even seizures if the imbalance goes unchecked.

*Vegetables and Fruits are good sources of electrolytes.

*Electrolytes needed by our bodies include Sodium, Potassium, Calcium and Bicarbonate.

*Elderly people are particularly susceptible to electrolyte imbalance.

*Kidney disease and severe dehydration can cause electrolyte imbalance.

Foods high in Potassium include:

-Beans

-Dark leafy greens

-Potatoes

-Squash

-Yoghurt

-Fish

-Avocados

-Mushrooms

-Bananas

While a healthy diet, drinking enough water topped off with exercise is the perfect solution to keeping healthy and giving the electrolytes in your body the perfect balance, let your doctor be the one to prescribe any electrolyte supplements for you in order to avoid having too much of any of the electrolytes in your bloodstream as this could produce equally stressful results to your body and organs.
