Have you ever been so in love with a rug that you couldn’t get yourself to lay it out on your floor for fear that it may lose its allure?

I’ll be the first to confess that I’ve had the most gorgeous turquoise textile rolled up in my closet for the past two years because I wasn’t ready to have it… well… stepped on. And why should I? What if, instead of art, mirrors and personal pictures, I hung up this hand-woven rug instead?

And just like that, I started scouring Pinterest for tapestry inspiration.

Tapisserie, the Art of Textiles

Tapisserie is Old French for tapestry and refers to the art of woven textiles. For centuries, tapestry has been used as a decorative element in palaces, churches and homes across continents. This allowed owners to preserve the richness of the textile by placing rugs on walls and not floors.

From a modern perspective, it’s a great way to add texture, pattern and culture into your home and one can use them to decorate stairwells, in place of headboards or to jazz up entry ways.

Tips on Hanging Tapestry in your Home

  1. Consider the size of your wall and the fit of the rug. You don’t want to overwhelm your space with this textile – especially if it has rich colours to it.
  2. Don’t place the rug on a wall that gets direct sunlight as it may damage the rug due to sun exposure.
  3. A lot of museums and experts are leaning towards velcro as a great way of hanging up tapestry without compromising its integrity so this is probably worth looking into.
  4. If your tapestry is thick and heavy, consider using an expert to mount it on your wall as opposed to tackling it as a DIY project. You’re less likely to damage it this way!

If you’re not entirely sure about hanging a rug in your home, you can always start with one of your favorite scarves and see if this look will suit your home’s personality.

Happy hanging!
