#BeautyBar: Simple steps to keeping your lips soft and moisturised

I’ve always had this thing for soft, luscious lips. Not in a sexual kind of way but more so the all-is-well-and-peace-is-restored, satisfying sense.

In fact, I’d go as far as saying that chapped lips are one of my biggest pet peeves.

For that reason, if I ever run into you and you happen to have a bad-lip day, don’t put it past me to hand out some Vaseline to help out your pout!

I believe my fascination with moisturized lips started when I was in high school and went through severe phase of dry, cracked lips. It then led to this bad habit where I would pick at my lips till I bleed and I remember my mum calling me out and saying something to the effect “keep that up and see how long it takes you to get a kiss.”

Rest assured that helped kill that habit then and there.

Ways to restore dry, chapped lips

Over the years I’ve accumulated a decent lip balm collection from all sorts of brands across the world. I keep a lip balm in my handbag at all times and never dare go to sleep without slapping on a nice thick layer.

But between my pregnancy and my fascination with matte lipsticks, lately my lips have required a little more attention than usual.

Here are some easy remedies that have helped keep my pout hydrated and kissable!

  1. Dry brushing – You know that old, soft toothbrush that you were about to throw out? Don’t. Gently brush your lips to help remove excess, flaky skin which ultimately prevents you from picking at your lips.
  2. Lip scrub – If you’re not into the old toothbrush trick and happen to love homemade DIYs, click here! It shows you a quick and easy recipe on how to make your own lip scrub that will exfoliate your lips.
  3. Lip balm – Once you’re done exfoliating and getting rid of that flaky skin, you’re going to want to moisturize. You want to find yourself a hydrating balm that acts as a protective layer and doesn’t require re-applying every two minutes.
  4. Avoid licking and peeling – If you like picking at scabs or cuticles then you’re probably guilty of picking at chapped lips! But this is a horrible habit as it doesn’t allow your lips to heal naturally. Licking lips will ultimately just dry them out faster so that’s definitely a no-no too. You’re just going to have to find something else to keep your hands busy!
  5. Hydrate – Like all other results we’d like to see on our body, it all starts from the inside. The more water you drink, the more hydrated your lips will be. Don’t forget to up your water intake whenever it gets hotter!
  6. Natural Oils – If you’re looking out for ingredients in your lip balms and moisturiser, try coconut oil, almond oil, cocoa butter or any oil that has vitamin E properties. These natural solutions will go a long way to keep your lips soft and cared for. It also means you might want to skip the matte lipsticks for a bit! Sorry ladies.
  7. Humidifiers – Dry heat is another culprit as to why your lips are chapping even more so investing in a humidifier might be worth the cash. This helps add moisture to the air and keep your lips hydrated.

And with that said, happy kissing ladies and gents!
