Cloned sheep still alive and kicking 9 years later

Four genetically-identical copies of Dolly the famous cloned sheep, which suffered ill health and died prematurely in 2003, are going strong at the advanced age of nine, a study said Tuesday.

Debbie, Denise, Dianna and Daisy — identical sisters of Dolly, though born 11 years later — were “in pretty good health”, according to researchers who studied whether cloned animals can live long, healthy lives.

The quadruplets were made from the same mammary gland cell line that yielded Dolly — the first mammal cloned using a technique called somatic-cell nuclear transfer (SCNT).

Born 20 years ago on July 5, 1996, Dolly developed crippling knee arthritis aged five and died of lung disease at the age of six — about half the life expectancy of her breed of Finn-Dorset sheep.

Dolly’s ill health and early demise raised red flags that clones may be sickly and age prematurely compared to naturally-conceived peers.

Cloned lab mice, too, have shown a propensity for obesity, diabetes, and dying young.

Kevin Sinclair of the University of Nottingham and a team conducted thorough medical exams on the four “Dollies” born in July 2007, as well as nine other sheep clones from different cell cultures.

All 13 animals, aged seven to nine, were the product of lab studies seeking to improve the efficiency of SCNT.

Experts measured the sheep’s glucose tolerance, insulin sensitivity, blood pressure and muscle and bone strength, in what they said was the first comprehensive assessment of age-related disease in animal clones.

A few of the sheep had mild osteoarthritis, the team found, and one a “moderate” form of the ailment — though this was not unusual for their age. None of the sheep were lame, as Dolly was.

– Ageing ‘normally’ –

Despite their “advanced age”, none of the sheep were diabetic, and they had normal blood pressure.

The data, said the team, was “compelling, indicating no detrimental long-term adverse effects of SCNT on the health of aged adult offspring.”

SCNT involves removing the DNA-containing nucleus from a cell other than an egg or sperm — a skin cell, for example — and implanting it into an unfertilised egg from which the nucleus had been removed.

Once transferred, the egg reprogrammes the mature DNA back to an embryonic state with the aid of an electric jolt, and it starts dividing to form an embryo.

No human is known to ever have been created in this way.

In spite of recent improvements, the technique remains inefficient, and expensive, with a small percentage of cloned embryos surviving to birth.

“For those clones that survive… however, the emerging consensus, supported by the current data, is that they are healthy and seem to age normally,” said the study in the journal Nature Communications.

Animal cloning is used in agriculture, mainly to create breeding stock, as well as in the business of “bringing back” people’s dead pets.

Despite initial high expectations, it has not found a place in the field of medical therapy for humans.

  • Omar

Hello! An Eritrean Government representative signed a book of condolences along with other African Members and a lot surprised ambassadors who couldnt believe what they saw. He even shook the hand of Meles Wife. How come you dont mention that in here?. In Eritrea we pay respect as good will and as neighbors, Its our culture and we are not heartless. All we want from the Government of Ethiopia is to accept the border ruling and remove its troops from Eritrean land so that we can just move on in peace and harmony. We are Fed up of war and tensions and biased articles popping up week after week making it look like we are the bad guys. Do your research well before you are quick to type.

    • Peace

I totally agree with you brother. It is good for the two people if the border demarcated quickly and live in peace but have you ever seen the problem away from the war? Today in Eritrea the people is suffering more than anytime and their problem has nothing to do with demarcation matter, rather It looks like the leadership Eritrea lost between being a rebel group and well established government with governing rules. Don’t get me wrong I am not saying they don’t have positive things but what I am saying being the border demarcated doesn’t end the suffering.

  • Whomever wrote this article, and the editor at the head of it, obviously have little knowledge on how politics and culture plays in this part of the world. It is true that no broadcast of the departure of Meles have been done inside Eritrea and there is a good reason for it. Meles was the cause of 25000 dead between 1998 and 2000 (almost half of the dead martyred during the 30 years long war for independence that took away 65000 sons and daughters to Eritrean mothers and fathers. It is not part of the Eritrean culture to jump up and down in regards to somebody that dies, also if he is your worst enemy; so in this occasion better not to talk about it as it could ignite some dis-pleasant reactions within the population. On the other side, Eritrea’s Deputy Ambassador at the AU was sent to sign the book of condolences and give Eritrea’s respect to the late wife. It must be remembered that also during the 30 years long struggle for independence and particularly under Menghistu’s hand, the Eritrean liberation front have always been very caring and respectful of the POW and the dead from the other side to a level that sometimes was even incomprehensible to outsiders. I am sure that after the burial of Meles, unless some kind of good will gesture is going to come out from the new PM in Ethiopia, the Eritrean government is going to make his voice heard again in relation to the abuse that are still being forced on Eritrea by the hands of Ethiopia and it’s friends, namely the USA.
For now, it is time to just keep silent…

    • TYPICAL PFDJ STYLE, keeping things silent, just like the silenced journalists, ministers and our Patriarch. It is true that before the independence the Eritrean liberation front was very caring and respectful to the Ethiopian POW’s. What is sad is that many of the people who brought us independence has been imprisoned by Eritrean regime for exactly 11 years with out any charges against them.

      • You mean the silenced terrorists like you. You call yourself a journalist too but all you do is lying, smear campaigning and supporting terrorism. By the way your boss Meles Zenawi is dead. RIH

        • Peace

I am not criticizing for your comment but I have one thing for you open your eyes and ears brother.

      • Meron the Human Traficker and a monster of Saini!!

      • No point in commenting this stupid reply. Just one thing; look at the reasons why the USA is using for jailing people in Guantanamo Bay with no access to lawyers, court or no formal accusations. And then ask yourself. A democracy like the USA can do that? If they can, why not anybody else. National security…a line invented by the USA to do what they want…democracy my sweet a#*!!

        • Peace

According your writing In what way those many pentecostal christians being jailed everywhere and what about those ( think best for the people) who criticize his lawless ruling who are suffering in underground prisons, are a treat to national security of Eritrea ( It is very laughable). If you have a mind this is a sign of being dictatorship. I guess this represent you and the likes: Zey snka hutsa kortumolu.

  • TheObviousThingIS

well omar – the only thing I know about Eritrea is that it is one of the top 10 places in the world for Christian persecution. So that is enough for me and all the rest of the civilized world to know that it is a backwards nation that does not offer freedom and justice and peace for ALL its citizens – no matter what religion or gender or skin colour they are – and if there is not freedom and justice and respect for ALL peoples in a nation, then there will never be peace within that nation.
You know, there was a political advisor in the Ottoman Sultan’s employment over 200 yrs ago and the Sultan asked him to go and study the Western countries and the relative peace they have in their countries, and why it is that the Ottoman’s could not establish political peace and security within their borders and the neighboring surrounding nations. So he went and studied. He came back and told the Sultan that the reason there is no peace was because the Islamic nations on a whole refuse to make a constitution that separates mosque from state as the Western nations separate “church from state”. That religion and politics when mixed together in a countries laws, would never allow for peace among ALL its peoples. I guess he had something correct in that observation because even today, for the most part, there are hardly ANY islamic majority countries that live in peace, even inside its OWN borders, much less with its neighbors – Eritrea sadly included in that situation obviously…
200 years later after that was told to the Ottoman Sultan, it looks like ATATURK the leader of modern Turkey finally got it right and made that principal of religious freedom and tolerance the foundation of Turkey’s new constitution. Turkey is the biggest “democratic islamic government” success story the world has EVER seen. And now the leaders of Eritrea, Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt can’t bring themselves to see Turkey’s success and model their OWN NEW governments on that success! They hope for the continued ignorance of the people and that the people will not demand the same because that is just admitting the “other side” is doing something right and they are NOT!! They cannot bring themselves to see – and ADMIT – that the way to achieve peace and PROSPERITY for ALL its people and create great economic growth for their future is by doing the same thing in THEIR CONSTITUTIONS!
They have tried it every other way for the last 150 years and its SO HIDEOUSLY OBVIOUS that it is NOT working – they should at least get a CLUE and try it like Turkey did. But there are STILL TODAY leaders in this world that do not WANT all people to have freedom and liberty and justice. It is such a shame the leaders of those countries – SO FAR – seem to be ones like that and they are OBVIOUSLY not as brave and upstanding as that great man Ataturk was, and work as he did to lead ALL their peoples into a better future, regardless of their race, station, colour, or religion…

  • They said enough when he was alive. Now Zenawi is dead and like the rest of the diplomats in Addis, we have seen them signed a book of condolences to pay respect for the dead.

  • fan256

As i see it in the comment section most outsiders think Eritrea as an uncivilized nation with a backward way of thinking but i again just want this people to just visit Eritrea and just see for themselves how wrong they were. But again if the Ethiopian government wants good relations with Eritrean government they will have to obey the law and order and move out of Eritrean lands then maybe both sides can negotiate and then lead to peace because we don’t need another war.

  • Do you wanna see Eritreans going nuts on the streets? We support our governments decision not to mention the worst human being on this earth and we better party in our homes for the sake of peace!

  • Awet

It’s a typical PFDJ, staying quite. Regardless of what
Meles did and didn’t do, the people of Eritrea should have the right to be
informed and let them be the judges. People talk about Ethiopia this and
Ethiopia that but the fact is under Meles the people and country of Ethiopia
    has prospered.

HGDF supporters don’t seem to ask why Eritrean citizens are
flooding to Ethiopian in thousands. I don’t see and hear Ethiopians flooding to
Eritrea. Why is that? The enemy of Eritrea is HGDF and their cult leader DIA
    not Ethiopia.

    • there are more Ethiopians leave their country than Eritrean doing the same. And most of times is for economical reasons. You and people like you like to use this as an opportunity to take advantage and use for political gain. It does not work

    • Peace

      Very good argument brother.

      • crithical thinker

Many people here says, If Ethiopia wants a smooth r/ship with
Eritrea….blablabla. I think they fail to realize who is going to
suffer if the bad r/ship continues. obviously, it is only Eritrea that
has been suffering and will be suffering. why? the answer is pretty
straight forward; its geographic, political and economical realities can
hardly allow Eritrea to stand as a country with out the support of
Ethiopia, the greatest nation in Africa with a strongest military power.
so, the only chance Eritrea has is establishing smooth r/ship with
Ethiopia whether the border issue is solved or not. otherwise, it will
        be East African Palestine.

  • Gess Dawit

This is not a journalist work. Awete and Asmarino are wanna be opposition websites. They were funded and operated by Meles Zenawi LLC. Funding is nada and empty now! Eritrea has nothing to say at this point. The last we said was mark out borders and we will be saying the something today and tomorrow. Anything more or less is less important to the people of Eritrea.

  • How cares if he dies or not, we Eritreans are busy on rebuilding Our Nation!! and who said Isaias and meles are from same ethnic groups ? Funny, you guys know how to copy and paste, you are a copy and paste jornatist!!

    • Peace

Take your immaturity somewhere else brother. Of course they are from the same ethnic group. Living on the opposite side of the line doesn’t make them different from eachother. Read wikipedia about the tigrigna people to have a good understanding.

      • Agames are Agames, they called tigre’s, we called tigrigna’s, about wikipedia anyone can write there, i mean a bone head like you, AGAME!! ”for your information don’t refer Wikipedia next time.

        • Peace

Do you want me to believe saying of chicken head people like you instead of scholars? I don’t care what you call me coz I believe everybody is the same. But I don’t understand Why you try hard to distance yourself from tigrawot. Oh I get you have identity crisis.

  • Meles Zenawi as an Ethiopian leader since is directly responsible for:

    1. Invading Eritrea in a open aggression under the pretext of a contested territory “Badme” which later was decided by the Eritrea-Ethiopia border commission belonging to Eritrea

    2. Deported over 70,000 Eritreans from Ethiopia in the most in humane circumstances (while the so called Humanitarian organizations, the UN, EU, AU & most of the pretender of human rights champion “USA” silently watching and encouraging such a cruel and racist act)

    3. Desecrated Eritrean Martyr’s cemeteries in those areas that the Ethiopian army occupied during their unprovoked attack and invasion of Eritrea

    4. Refused till the day he died to abide by the “Final and binding” decisions of the EEBC to leave all occupied Eritrean territories and allow physical demarcation of the border ( of course again under the tutelage, nurturing and heavy funding by successive US administrations) siting that it accepts the EEBC decisions in principle but wants a dialogue first with the Eritrean Government.

    5. Refused to accept the virtual demarcation that the EEBC put out before concluding its mission of investigating and fact checking in to the Eritrea-Ethiopia border conflict.

    6. He worked tirelessly and left no stone un turned to tarnish Eritrea’s image and black mail its leadership.

    7. Through lies and working with his handlers in Washington, he persuaded the UN Security council to pass a resolution on Eritrea to target its fledgling mining sector and tried to deny the Eritrean Diaspora their right to participate in the nation building en-devours and to exercise their right to pay remittance tax to the Eritrean Government for getting services inside Eritrea

    8. He openly declared that his administration will overthrow the Eritrean Government directly or by creating “Eritrean Opposition” parties that he will do the job for him and his financiers.

    9. Last but not least, earlier this year, he bragged and announced that his government invaded 18km deep into Eritrean territories to go after non-existent “Terrorists” (again with the full blessing and collaboration by his partner in crime Susan Rice to his illegal and unlawful actions against the By Laws and Charter of the UN).

Now, dear Mr./Madam AFP, please be kind enough and have some decency to the world of journalism and tell us why the Eritrean Government would dedicate its resources and man power to announce the death of a Prime Minster that has never been anything but a messenger of death, intimidation, and destruction to the Eritrean people?

The Eritrean Government even though its has no diplomatic relations with Ethiopia and is not obligated to send any messages of condolences, being the peace maker in the region and a champion of good will and friendship among the peoples of the Horn of Africa, it took an unexpected and a very politically mature and wise stand by signing in the book of condolences through its Deputy Ambassador at the AU.

There is no bigger announcement and show of compassion other than this to a nation and people who are mourning the death of their prime minister.

Rather than brushing off just surface of the Eritrea Ethiopia border conflict, how about concentrate and work for bring out the truth to the world the final and binding decision of the EEBC which the deceased Ethiopian leader and his financiers at the UN security Council and the US Government have hijacked committing the biggest crime against humanity in the 21 century.

May God bless the people and Government of Eritrea and help them spread their message of Peace and Harmony not only in the Horn region, but everywhere in Africa.

    Aman Nebiat

Why you spend your time to write something that is very rubbish. Have you ever heard this tigrigna quote? weden key tsel a seyti wedeln ytsela. Well I was there when the people needs me unlike you guys who are just trying to be country philic on a sudden. Let me ask you one thing, did the so called government of Eritrea do its best for peace ( before the war broke out)? Both leaders put the people in their hidden grudge, which they had during the armed struggle. Thinking to destroy one another.

      • Negiat

I see a few people talking nonsense here. Whether Eritrean media broadcasting Meles Zenawi’s death or not is none of anybodies business. For your information there is something called CHOICE. So, if Eritrea CHOSE not to, It is not you concern. You guys take your little knowledge elsewhere.JUST BUZZ OFF!!!

      • Negiat

By the way, if you care for Eritrea and Eritreans you wouldn’t be talking like you do. It seems you are Ethiopia’s supporter. As stated above by my Eritrean brother Aman a lot of unlawful things have been done on our people and country. Aman has written this because he wants to educate people like you about the facts that has been taking place in Eritrea. What I see here is though, you are not capable of learning. Sad case.

    • Doesn’t matter

Please try to think from different perspective . It is our mind set that placed us to the lowest level of thinking style.

The dictatorial regime in Asmara is sick and gutted to observe PM Meles Zenawi’s hailed as a hero both inside Ethiopia and internationally. If the case was different the Eritrean regime would have broadcasted 24/7,

    • What a laugh…he has being hailed a hero by the USA, UK and few others that gave him billions of dollars so that he could give them the opportunity to control Somalia via proxy. Ask NGO if he is a hero. By the way…he did not need to die to be hailed as a hero by those few, and for sure Eritrea have been witnessing since 1998 that he was a darling for the western world…he was a darling in all G8 meetings and conferences too. Not a surprise anyway…as soon as u r a friends of those powers, you are never a dictator

  • Danuel

The people inside Eritrea do have access to international media channels like BBC, CNN, VOA, ALJEZERA and etr. every one knows that That Meles is dead. I don’t understand why the government of Eritrea should bring it on the local media its not necessary at all. They done a great job.

    • Eriboy

Most people in Eritrea have satellite dishes and have access to bbc, cnn, voa and aljezzera even etv.So most people in Eritrea have heard about his death through satellites or word of mouth.

Eritrea is simply dying a slow death. Without Ethiopia using the Eritrean ports and without Ethiopia providing a market for Eritrean little products, Eritrea will end up as waste land in few years.

  • Naizgi Kiflu

Meles Zenawi’s strategy to ignore Eritrea as if it does not exist is working miracles. Ethiopian official news outlets do not care about Eritrea but the Eritrean regime is obsessed about Ethiopia’s false “demise”.
The worst insult to Eritrea is that not only Africa had ignored to them but also the Arabs that used them as a condom against Ethiopia are enslaving and raping young Eritreans. This is a land that was ashamed to speak an African language – the Amharic and made an Arab language its official language. But this did not save Eritrean boys and girls from Arab rape and slavery.

As an Eritrean and a human being, I am sad to see people say hateful things to each other when they could be having constructive discussion and learn from each other. In my opinion, it is the Eritrean people’s right to know what is happening around them. Be it good or bad news, we all have the right to know. I don’t understand how some of us live abroad, experience unprecedented freedom and not want our children, brothers and parents to have the same. I hope to see the day where we all Eritrean have big hearts and better perspective to speak and listen freely and respect the opinions of others.

    • Eribuddah

Plato said,”Only the dead have seen the end of war.” I guess Mr. Zenawi can rest in peace now. Eritrea’s destiny doesn’t depend on one individual, certainly not a non Eritrean.
