Sunny Dolat is a Kenyan fashion stylist, creative director and production designer. His background in visual arts is visible in everything he does and posts on Instagram.
“I came to realize what a stylist does is tell stories,” says Dolat, one of Kenya’s top creative minds and Capital Lifestyle’s Instagrammer of the Week, in an interview with Business Daily Africa.
On Dolat’s Instagram feed, you’ll be inspired by unique shapes, patterns, beautiful light and people found on the sets that he regularly works on. Every photo is composed in a way that even the most mundane things in every day life can be captured like art.
Capital Lifestyle hooked-up with him to find out how photography and Instagram have impacted his journey in Mobile Photography.
What cameras do you enjoy shooting with and what do you like most about them?
I actually just shoot with my phone, I have an iPhone 5s, which I’ve been shooting with for the last 2 years. I’ve been pretty happy with it so far, but I’ve been thinking about starting to use a camera, soooooooo we’ll see how that goes
Where do you shoot most of your photos and what sort of photos do you like to take best?
I shoot pretty much everywhere, be it on the way to set or a cool door I saw while running errands, that’s why I enjoy using my phone, the ability to photograph whenever. At the moment, I’m really enjoying sunsets and sunrises, architectural details and perspective, so most of my photos feature at least on of those.
What are your top tips for taking captivating Instagram photos?
I think composition is key. Taking a moment to consider the composition of your image(s) can make huge difference.
Which instagrammers do you recommend everyone to follow?
@lafrohemien (Sarah Waiswa) – I really love seeing Nairobi through Sarahs’ eyes, her work really captures the spirit of the city and it’s people.
@love_aesthetics (Ivania Carpio) – This account is minimalist heaven!
This how I want to Instagram when I grow up! The composition! The tonal restriction! Ugh. It’s achingly beautiful.
@streetetiquette (Joshua Kissi) – This account is just straight up dope!
@themaganga (Maganga) Started following him a few weeks ago, and I really like the muted tones in his images.
