Matt Damon won the Golden Globe for best actor in a comedy or musical film on Sunday for his role in “The Martian.”

The Oscar-winning actor, who played an astronaut stranded on Mars in the blockbuster film, bested Christian Bale and Steve Carell from “The Big Short”, Al Pacino for “Danny Collins” and Mark Ruffalo for “Infinitely Polar Bear.”

The Golden Globes opened with some sharp jokes from Ricky Gervais and a win for Kate Winslet for best supporting actress in a film for her role in the biopic “Steve Jobs.”

The glittering gala in Beverly Hills is seen as a good indicator of the films and actors that will compete for Oscars glory on February 28 — and is second only to the Academy Awards in terms of Tinseltown buzz.
