#CapeWineSeries : Spier Wine Farm, The Ideal Wine Tourism Experience

Walks and Tours

Spier is one of the oldest wine farms in South Africa with a recorded history dating back to 1692. While rooted in this heritage, Spier has a vibrant and conscious energy. Award-winning wine can be paired with fabulous food, grown either on the farm or by nearby farmers. The winery is one of the most awarded in South Africa and the Spier Hotel and meeting facilities offer inspiring winelands getaways in the tranquility of nature.

It doesn’t come as a shocker that Condé Nast Traveler World Saver Award recognised the estate as the top international destination ‘Doing it All’ back in 2011.

There are so many activities at the Spier farmstead that will see you ticking off so many items from your list.  The walks and tours will enrich your experience further and these include the “Gables” audio tour which tells of a fictionalized account of the world of a Stellenbosch wine farm narrated by Sannie de Goede, a slave woman on the Spier Estate in 1836 on the eve of her freedom. Vineyard tours aboard Segway personal transporters, Protea walk which takes place on the South bank of the Eerste River and offers an opportunity to observe close-up the large variety of proteas growing on the farm., and finally the Heritage walk which combines a beautiful amble through nature with some interesting facts about Spier’s heritage. The walk takes guests past some of the historic buildings.

The walls of the Spier Manor house, Conference center and the Spier Hotel show off beautiful , rich Art. It is said that Spier has one of the most extensive collections of contemporary art in the whole of South Africa. The work is rotated on an annual basis to give exposure to as many of the artists as possible, and to keep the spaces fresh and alive for visitors and staff. The art chosen for display aims to show the richness and diversity of the SA experience and artistic talent.

Children are welcome too…

It’s not only the adults that get to enjoy the Spier wine farm experience, kids are welcome and are catered for as well. This makes it the premier destination for families wanting to travel without compromising on quality.
