Sue Perkins has quit Twitter after receiving a deluge of death threats following reports she’s up for Top Gear presenter’s job.

The 45-year-old TV star has signed off of the social media website, due to a barrage of threats after she became the bookies’ favourite to replace sacked Jeremy Clarkson on the BBC motoring show.

Sue tweeted: “Guys, post the utterly fabricated story about me & Top Gear, my timeline has been full of blokes wishing me dead … This morning, someone suggested they’d like to see me burn to death. All of which goes to say that I am off Twitter for a bit. Love and peace x (sic)”

Long-term host Clarkson was axed following a booze-fuelled fracas with a TV producer in a hotel, and the Great British Bake Off host quickly became odds-on favourite to replace Jeremy, followed by Dermot O’Leary – who recently left The X Factor after 10 years – and Jodie Kidd.

Being a big motor racing fan, and holding the record for the fastest celebrity lap in the Top Gearfeature, Star in a Reasonably Priced Car Jodie has previously admitted she would be up for the presenting job.

The 36-year-old beauty said: “Why not? Yes! I’m sure we can get two people to sign a petition.”
