The final note of Yvonne Chaka Chaka’s ‘Motherland’ with her full band from South Africa seemed to encapsulate the whole afternoon. Unforced, exquisite and filled with spirit – it felt like a logical conclusion with taste and sophistication.

The Princess of Africa, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, entranced Sunday’s Koroga Festival-goers held at the urban forest, Nairobi Arboretum. The South African songstress breathed new life into her many hits, which showcased her longevity in the music industry and her natural flare for performance.

Celebrating thirty years in the industry and Yvonne Chaka Chaka’s upcoming 50th birthday, popular Kenyan sultry vocalists June Gachui, Kalekye Mumo and Fena stormed the stage to serenade “Mama” together with a surprise birthday cake from InterContinental Nairobi and Capital FM.

“I was caught with my pants down,” Yvonne Chaka Chaka gasped as she wiped away tears. “I love you Nairobi!”

Matching the Princess of Africa’s revelatory performance, Kenya’s Nameless also brought the house down by re-presenting his familiar music afresh, whilst Fena opened the 6th edition of Koroga Festival with mellow tunes from her latest album that warmed-up festival-goers.
