The world’s best cities for dating and finding love

Paris love

(Relaxnews) – Oh la la, it’s true. Paris really is the city of love. At least, that’s according to the results of a global survey which named the French capital the best city in the world for dating.

After asking more than 11,000 readers about their dating lives ahead of Valentine’s Day, city guide Time Out found that Parisians are the most satisfied with their local dating scene, snagging the top score of 83 out of 100.

Melbourne, Kuala Lumpur, Beijing and Chicago round out the top five spots on the list.

Meanwhile, taking the dubious title of “Most Desperate City” and landing near bottom of the heap is New York, where nearly half (45 percent) of solo respondents admitted they were “sad to be single.”

And as the Carrie Bradshaws of the city know well, the dating scene in New York suffers a famous gender imbalance, supported by the results of the Time Out survey.

Male respondents in the city, for instance, describe the dating scene as “a fertile orchard, brimming with opportunity.”

Women, on the other hand, describe it as a “war zone.”

In a more cryptic description, both male and female respondents in Paris, London and Sydney agreed that their respective cities were most like a coral reef: “…swimming with exotic variety but patrolled by the odd hammerhead shark.”

The results of the wide sweeping survey also reveal some interesting findings on dating in the 21st century.

More than half (60 percent) of respondents, for instance, agreed that the online dating sites and apps are the most efficient ways of getting a date, with the exception of Paris, where singletons still manage to find partners the old-fashioned way — “going out and parties.”

The survey also found that the world’s favorite foreign accent is of the British variety, followed by the American, Irish, Australian and French accent.

And when it comes to “The Big Question,” the answer is 3.53.

That is, the globally accepted number of dates before it’s appropriate to engage in nookie time.

The poll surveyed readers in 24 cities, including London, Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Sydney, Tokyo and Beijing.

Here are some other highlights from the Time Out survey:

-38 percent of readers admit to having dated someone who’s already in a relationship
-41 percent of those admit to having dated a married man or woman
-Bad breath is the biggest deal breaker for singletons in London (58 percent) and Singaporeans (67 percent)
-Parisians hate a “bad attitude” (58 percent)
-Bad politics is a dealbreaker for more than half of all women in Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles
-More than half of all dates around the world (53 percent) end in a kiss; 20 percent end in nudity; and 28 percent end in disappointment
-6 is the number of dates it takes to become mutually exclusive; 9 the number of dates when you can officially declare your happiness to the world (and that you’re an official item)
