Demystifying Vaginal Odors

How Safe Is Your Vaginal Beautification

All vaginas have a smell. A natural beautiful smell, but there are some smells that are deemed “unnatural” when it comes to your lady parts and which could mean there’s a little trouble in the “between-your-legs” department. The smell from down there can depend on your diet, daily activities and can also be an indicator of a serious infection .

Below are some 6 vaginal odors you should be aware of so that you are able to tell whether it is normal or cause for alarm.

Sweet

The things you eat can make your vagina smell a little differently especially citrus fruits like grapefruit, pineapple and oranges which have the power to make vaginal fluids smell and taste better. Foods like onions, garlic, asparagus and broccoli on the other hand may contribute to a not so pleasant smelling hoo-ha.

Bleachy

If you are a lubricant fan or if you use condoms that have certain  lubricants on them, your vagina may acquire a different smell…something like a “bleachy” or chlorine-like smell. It is not an alarm causing smell though, so there wouldn’t be need to fret!

Fishy

If your hoo-ha gives off a strong, foul odor (almost like fish) and a greenish discharge you could have an STD like Trichomonosiasis in which case run to your gynae! If you have just the fishy smell then you could be having a bacterial infection like Vaginosis which could be caused by an overgrowth of bacteria upsetting your PH balance in the process. This would therefore cause an increase in vaginal discharge and the foul smell especially after intercourse.

Musky

Depending on your daily activities, your hoo-ha will smell a little different. For example, after intense activities like running, cycling or spin class your hoo-ha may give off  a strong musky smell courtesy of the sweat glands surrounding your lady parts. A shower will usually sort this out.

Tinny

If your hoo-ha has a certain constant blood-like smell during that time of the month, there should be no cause for worry. During and around the time of your period, blood can mix with the natural vaginal smell and make you smell a little different for a while.

Yeasty

Every woman should have a small/ healthy amount of yeast in their lady parts but when there’s an overgrowth of yeast (indicated by a faint bread-like smell and a sticky cottage cheese-like discharge) that could mean that something is not quite right and a visit to your gynae would be ideal.
