10 Tips For Healthier Aging

Seatbelt

6. Be safe

It really is simple things. Wear a seatbelt or a helmet. If you’re an avid jogger, jog with a friend or your dog for protection. Don’t take unnecessary risks. Recovery takes longer and is more difficult as we get older, so remove things in your home, such as uneven carpeting or loose wires that may cause you to fall.

7. Find your passion

It may sound cliché, but it really is important to love what you do. If your job doesn’t do it for you, either get another one, or get a hobby that fulfills you. Go back to school and study something new, or take a cooking class. Learn how to be an expert wine taster. Experiment until you find what makes you insanely happy. When you look forward to waking up in the morning when you go to bed, you’re doing something right. And the quality of your life will improve.

8. Laugh

Studies have been found that happiness boosts your immune system. This is because it increases the levels of the human growth hormone in your body. Laughter increases your endorphin levels which elevate your mood, and decreases the levels of cortisol and adrenaline which lowers stress. So, laugh. Long, hard, and often. And live longer.

9. Connect

Get to know your neighbours. Don’t forget to visit family. A strong social network, both in and outside your family, creates a support system that gets you through good times and bad, leaving you less depressed and less stressed, two things that can literally cut your life short. Meet new friends and keep the old ones, and treasure your family; you will have something to live for.

10. Get rid of stress

Stress can kill you. How? It causes you not to sleep-and sleep depravation is one way to cut short your life. It causes anxiety, nervousness and irritability, making it difficult to get along with people, affects your concentration, making you perform poorly at school or on the job. It also weakens your immune system, making you more susceptible to colds and other diseases, possibly even some types of cancer. It is also a contributing factor in many conditions, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, headaches, and arthritis. Remove the stress causing agents in your life. Drop that toxic friend. Cut down your workload. Quit that overbearing job. Meditate. Find a way to bring calm and peace into your life, and lengthen your life by a few more years.
