Rumours and hearsay about iPhone 5

The buzz and hype that precedes an Apple product release borders on absurdity as thousands of Apple fanatics line-up and camp at Apple stores days before products hit the shelf. Tech commentators and analysts outdo themselves as they look into their ‘tech crystal balls’ to prophesy about the features and dates of then next iPhone release.

But one thing is undisputed; Apple knows how to keep a secret. A majority of the leaks are off target, some over-exaggerate new features while others water down the product. Apple surprised everyone when they released iPhone 4S when everyone was expecting iPhone 5. So we look at some of the rumours around iPhone 5 in the blogsphere.

Techradar:

“While early reports pegged the new iPhone release date for October, landing closely to last year’s schedule, it seems we’ll be seeing the phone in September this year as Apple looks to take on Samsung’s new phone sooner rather than later”

“Unlike the iPhone 4S, the new iPhone will be a completely new design from what has gone before, so that means an entirely new casing as we saw with the iPhone 3G and, later, the iPhone 4.”

Cnet.com

“An iPhone case manufacturer in China posted a picture of its newest iPhone 5 case, and threw in a picture of the supposed device, too. Not only do we see that it’s a little taller than the current model, but a side shot of the handset’s bottom reveals a shorter pin connector. This further corroborates existing rumors that the dock is going to shrink.”

T3.com

“While the iPhone 4S was more of an evolutionary upgrade, with a faster processor an improved camera and the addition of the Siri voice control app, the iPhone 5 is likely to bring a more revolutionary approach, perhaps with the addition of a 4G LTE internet and a larger screen size.”

9to5mac.com

“The SIM card slot, the most-centered component on the motherboard, does appear slightly smaller in size compared to the 4/4S.”

“Other hints given away by the photo are that Apple has redesigned the dock connector to be smaller.

This may end up making older accessories – from charger cables to speaker docks – incompatible, but there will likely be adapters released to ensure older accessories still work.”

“Speaking of compatibility, developers may need to update their apps to take advantage of the larger size, or there may be a situation similar to when the first iPad was launched, when iPhone apps would appear with a big black border around the age.”

Techcrunch

“There is also an obviously smaller mini-port not unlike the 19-pin mini connector we’ve confirmed here at TechCrunch, and a new speaker grill down at the bottom.”

I would like to see a slight change to the message keyboard layout. Currently the send button sits above the keyboard on the right-hand side – exactly where the ‘backspace’ button sits on a computer keyboard. Many times I have made a mistake when typing then instinctively gone to delete it with ‘backspace’ but hit ‘Send’!! Moving the Send button to the left-hand side would avoid this.

  • The iPhone 5 wont have a different aspect ratio so that on its release all apps can be used full screen (although not in full quality) I’m hoping for a 4.5 inch screen (or bigger) with the same ratio, NFC, a new slimmer frame, and obviously 4g LTE. But because I have an iPad with over 100 apps and over 2000 songs I’ll buy it even if it has the same frame as the 4s.

  • I wish the IPhone had a better GPS navigational one that speaks turn by turn and shows aerial pics as you go like my Droid does.
