It’s been a few months since Capital Lifestyle Magazine’s last visit to Corner Affair Bistro, a cozy and earthy hideaway nestled in Westlands, away from the city’s traffic-strewn streets.
Not much has changed. Generous al fresco dining space covered delicately with branches still surround the converted villa; comfy white pillows still invite you to lounge in front of the fireplace and outside on the patio; service is still tardy and thankfully, the kitchen still creates delicious, simple and wholesome dishes.
Welcomed new additions include the outdoor bakery, which pushes out fresh artisan breads, pastries and delicious oven-baked pizza on a daily basis. Replacing the old paper menus, the laser-etched wooden versions eloquently echoed the earthy theme of the restaurant.
Unfortunately for the dedicated salad lovers, the refreshing Walnut and Apple Salad that stood out on the entire menu from our last visit, no longer is available. However, with over thirteen oven-baked pizza selections and seven sandwich choices, the extensive selection makes up for the retired salad, and ensures that the Corner Affair Bistro is still the best choice for lunch if you’re in the neighbourhood.
The Capital Lifestyle Magazine favourite was the Chicken Schnitzel. The flattened-chicken covered with bread crumbs was deep fried until golden brown – crispy on the outside and mouth-wateringly juicy on the inside. Served with a healthy portion of potatoe wedges, this will definitely be a lunch favourite.
The disappointment was the Chicken Escalope. As reviewed last time, Capital Lifestyle Magazine fell in love with the deliciously moist chicken, stuffed with basil and wrapped with bacon. However, this visit, our Chicken Escalope was dry on the inside and outside. Fortunately, the sides of creamy mashed potatoes and sautéed greens saved the day.
Pumpkin Corn Soup – The savoury creamy pumpkin soup base lacked depth in seasoning, like traditional nutmeg. However, the sweet-corn twist infused a natural sweetness into the steamy hot bowl of soup that was distinctly hearty.
The spiced prawns as a starter were delicious! The traditional Moroccan spiced grilled king prawns were on the overcooked side – rubbery, but the flavours of chilli and citrus were incredible. The prawns were completely de-shelled, including the entire tale – great attention to detail!
Finally, for dessert, the Apple Pie was surprisingly different. The memorable and refreshingly sweet apple filling was accentuated with Sultanas soaked in a “secret ingredient.” Perfect ending to a rich and hearty lunch!
