Zimbabwe Fashion Week 2012 Breaking Barriers

From August 30th–September 1st, 2012 the largest city wide fashion show in Zimbabwe will return for its 3rd edition! The annual Zimbabwe Fashion Week is going strong now with regular annual shows and returns to the city of Harare to feature nationally and internationally designers and creative talent. The non-profit organisation Zimbabwe Fashion Week Trust, aims to create and to develop the growing fashion industries in Zimbabwe, to help advance the career of select local talent and celebrate the thriving fashion retail community.

The ZFW Trust, was founded by model and renowned designer Priscilla Chigariro, (see image below left) who will use this event to link international partners, local buyers, agents, editors and more to this vibrant fashion industry in Zimbabwe. Her aim and “the underlying idea behind Zimbabwe Fashion Week is to create a sustainable project which will work like a well oiled machine.” It is her opportunity and desire to give back to her birth country by establishing a solid fashion platform that presents new design talent.

She originally came up with the idea in 2009 where it took place at FTV Café Village Walk in Sandton, South Africa. And her experience includes her winning a contract to model, age just 18years old in South Africa, as well as working on various campaigns, advertisements and shows like the Vukani Fashion Show, SA Fashion Week, Guess Jeans campaign, Virgin Mobile, Coca cola lite and done shoots in publications such as Destiny Magazine, True Love, Elle Magazine, Cosmopolitan and Y Mag.

So with now focusing on Zimbabwe Fashion Week she created awareness of Zimbabwe’s fashion designers and she wished to get buyers interested in what the local designers had to offer.

Zimbabwe Fashion Week (ZFW) jets into 2012 with a new pace. Striving to exceed previous events, expectations and step into the international fashion industry, Breaking Barriers.

The focus of this years theme “Breaking Barriers” is on technology and its’ progression and affect, not only in the fashion world but all areas. As we all know, the creative mind has no limits. The smartest computers and gadgets are no smarter than man’s brain. So, ZFW are dedicating 2012 to streaking forward, not only in technology

ZFW tells us in their recent newsletter that

“We Zimbabweans have an inert, unsurpassable drive to succeed.”

Priscilla Chigariro, sole owner and executive producer of ZFW has a dream. A dream of giving back her fashion and modelling experience to her birth country, Zimbabwe. She has taken on this enormous task of bringing fashion to Zimbabwe, creating a platform for young designers, careers for models and so many more aspects linked to the event. Launched in 2009, this has not been an easy road, but she perseveres. By the sounds of it every other Zimbabwean out there who has a dream and so it is fitting for ZFW theme for 2012 to be called Breaking Barriers. Keep posted with us to hear more about what is happening and who will be showcasing.
