The Hunger Games premieres in Nairobi

The Hunger Games premieres in Nairobi cinemas this weekend, nearly a fortnight after it first came on the North American silver screen.

It has amassed a total of Sh25.2 billion shillings – yes billion – at the US box office so far and is expected to replicate that popularity in Kenya too.

The movie, based on a book by Suzanne Collins, tells the tale of a teenage girl who has to battle to stay alive in a reality TV show set in a post apocalyptic world. Does that make sense?

Basically, from action, to suspense to tears, every moment is a popcorn moment.

Starring Jennifer Lawrence and singer turning actor Lenny Kravitz among others, The Hunger Games has received raving reviews across the board. US fans of the book were however upset that one of the lead characters in the flick was ‘black’ but that shouldn’t be an issue for Kenyan movie-goers.

The Hunger Games premieres at the Fox Theatres at 5pm Friday, amid other new releases sensitive to the fact that schools are closed this month.

American Pie: Reunion, animated film Dr Seuss’ The Lorax and adventure film Hugo starring Jude Law are all rated PG, or thereabouts.

Even the Bollywood release this week Housefull 2 is a rib-cracker.

Oldies Rishi Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor, Mithun Chakraborty, Chunky Pandey, and Johnnie Lever have been brought back to life and lord it over eight young men and women who kinda look like.

Here’s the trailer.

So what will you be watching?
