An ambitious endeavour that will see more than 50,000 high resolution photographs digitally stitched together, will allow Google Earth users to take a virtual dive 100 meters under the ocean’s surface around the Great Barrier Reef.

After successfully mastering street-level photography in almost all corners of the world, Google Earth is now busy documenting the planet’s landmass underwater.

Users will soon be able to take a swim through the World Heritage Site, Great Barrier Reef in Australia, in the comfort of their own home through the internet.

Thousands of 360-degree underwater panoramas will be collected over the next several months with the sub-aquatic version of the equipment used for Google Street View.
