Blankets & Wine: All eyes on Mtukudzi, Dempsey

The Blankets and Wine team are getting themselves a high profile Zimbabwean artist as a birthday present when they turn three years old this weekend.

Oliver Mtukudzi, whose simple but explosive energy never fails, will be headlining at the Leisure Gardens in Mamba Village on Sunday, after performances by Kenyans Dempsey, Nina Ogot, and the eclectic Drummer Queen aka Muthoni.

Oliver’s last performance in Nairobi was a more private affair but this edition sponsored by KCB Advantage is expected to be a much bigger offering.

In the past year, KCB has sponsored South African emotive singer Thandiswa Mazwai, Belgium based Ivorian strummer, Manou Gallo, and South Africa band, Mafikizolo.

Aside from the good music, shisha, barbecues, cocktails, shukas and families will be in plenty at the monthly gathering.

Of the artists performing, Dempsey is the newest, a protégé of Kenyan neo-soul musician Stan.

Borrowing influences from Asa, John Mayer and John Legend (very evident), Dempsey’s music is taking shape under the Sauti Academy, which is run by Penya Africa.

His guitar is a sure seller and his musical talent has been touted to have a ‘rare maturity’. Take a look below!
