MOVIE REVIEW: Contagion

Hollywood is losing it. They should focus on the big life-like alien structures and superb acting but employ Europeans to write the scripts for them. I’m just saying… Have you watched Contagion?

I can say straight up that the trailer is fantastic. It will get your goose-bumps nice and ready, plus rev your taste buds to check out this new star-studded flick at the cinemas. However, I realised at Fox Sarit Centre last night that one of the things you’re likely to be infected with is a healthy dose of boredom.

Surely, not with Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law and Sanaa Lathan, you might think?

I liked Thor, Transformers and even Cowboys and Aliens, but Contagion has missed the mark by a solid kilometre.

In the same spirit with a lot of recently released movies, this movie tells the tale of an epidemic that is spreading faster than wildfire around the world.

Things go from bad to worse as the best heads fail to decipher the cause of the disease in an attempt to stop it. Experts assigned to the job fall victim to the deadly fast killing virus.

Spoiler Alert: Paltrow dies in the first 10 minutes of the film – claimed by the frightening condition??? But alas, fans can see her in videos and pictures throughout the rest of the film.

Matt Damon is underplayed, Jude Law doesn’t quite fit his character, Sanaa is almost non-existent and the plot climaxes about half-way into the film, leaving you with a desire to send important text messages as you wait for it to end.

Among the things I did like though was the make-up, the easy switch between cities across the world and the multifaceted display of humanity that I think the authors of the movie were really trying to highlight. It will also leave you with a healthy fear of people coughing next to you.

Disclaimer: this is my opinion. But feel free to share yours after you watch it.
