Strawberry Daiquiri: shaken not stirred

June 17, 2011 – Let’s face it. Kenyans need to put in a lot of work when it comes to entertaining guests.

As much as a good marinade on your chicken or some Shalimar for the beef roast are good for the soul – a little more dazzle and pizzazz will do you no harm at all.

Since everybody does the grill and the Bring Your Own Bottle, stepping up the game could bring you into good repute.

If you are interested in whipping up something a little more defined than a mixture of Kenya Cane, Chelsea Gin, Tiger Vodka and Fizzto in a bucket, check this out!

Yesterday, I met Henry Mirende, the Bartender at Seven Seafood and Grill who showed me how to make a Strawberry Daiquiri.

Here’s what you need: Blended strawberries (30ml), Sugar syrup, crushed ice, Brown Sugar (1 teaspoon), Fresh Lime (30ml), White Rum (60ml) and something to shake the mix in.

Starting with the fruits put all the ingredients into one lidded jar-type gadget and shake it firmly for roughly 30 seconds. You can shake it either from left to right or up and down, it doesn’t matter. All Henry says is that ‘shaken is definitely much better than blended’!

If rum makes you a bit too naughty, you can try to use some vodka instead. And while you’re at it, create your own cocktail by tweaking the ingredients.

Just to give you an idea; what’s your favourite fruit?
