April 21, 2011 – Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy, a 3D erotic comedy released in Hong Kong last week has beaten the first-day record set by Hollywood blockbuster Avatar – the highest raking movie ever.

It took in Sh28.4 million on its first day, compared to James Cameron’s epic which earned Sh26.9 million. 

The film has so far taken in Sh174 million in the last five days.

The 99 minute film is a remake of a 1991 Hong Kong movie by the same name, which tells the story of a sexually frustrated scholar in ancient China who loses himself in the harem of a duke he befriends.

The Cantonese production features Japanese porn stars Hara Saori and Suo Yukiko and Hong Kong actress Vonnie Liu.

The screening has drawn a massive audience from mainland China, where erotic content is banned in cinemas.
