November 24, 2010 – American hip hop artists Rick Ross and Kenya’s P-Unit have also been added onto the array of musical talent that will grace the MTV Africa Music Awards fete in Lagos, Nigeria about three weeks from now.
Together with South Africa’s Jozi and Nigerian Wande Coal, they will join a list of more than seven artists already listed in MAMAs line-up, which include DJ Arafat (Ivory Coast), Daddy Owen (Kenya), and Fally Ipupa (DRC), who was also there in 2009.
Speaking in Nairobi following the confirmation of P-Unit’s selection as one of the headline performers, Airtel Kenya Head of Corporate Communications Dick Omondi described the trio’s selection as an affirmation of Kenya’s growing excellence in popular performing arts.
“At Airtel Kenya, we are delighted that Kenyan artistes have been selected to perform at such an auspicious international event once again confirming Kenya’s world class rating,” Omondi said.
Ross is nominated in the Best International category at the MAMA awards, while P-Unit make their debut as contenders for Best Group.
It will be the 34 year old rapper’s first visit to the beautiful African continent and comes shortly after the release his latest album “Teflon Don”.
He’s a big man with a burly beard and a not-very-burly voice, best known for his song “Hustlin” (2006) which ironically was his debut single.
A statement on the MAMAs website reads that ‘Rick Ross has been described by the New York Times as “one of rap’s most potent and creative forces”.
MAMAs with Zain got re-branded on Monday and is headlining for the first time in Lagos next month (Dec 11) as the MTV Africa Music Awards with Airtel. The sponsorship is in association with MasterCard.
