November 5, 2010 -The Sankara Nairobi hotel has been officially launched on Thursday the 4th, and one Hon. Prime Minister Raila Odinga opened it officially.
Hosted by Charles Njonjo, the chairman of Sankara Nairobi the launch was well attended by 120 of the city’s most noted CEO’s dignitaries and officials.
“We are delighted that our Hon. Prime Minister and respected guests were able to join us in marking this momentous occasion. The journey to create Sankara began well over four years ago and it is with a great sense of pride and fulfillment that we celebrate its official opening,” said Njonjo.
The event included a personal tour of the hotel and a contemporary African performance art.
The Prime Minister Raila Odinga asked the industry’s players to increase their accommodation facilities for the country to hold the large tourist numbers that had been projected.
He also expressed confidence in the growth of the tourism sector saying it was one of the key drivers of the country’s economy.
“We want to be among the top 10 tourist destination countries in the world by the year 2030 so we must slowly increase our bed capacity,” he said.
Internationally, Sankara Nairobi has already received much recognition and acclaim. Most noteworthy being that it was recently listed in the annual Wallpaper and Fortune magazine’s best new business hotels around the globe shortlist; the Financial Times How to spend it guide as well as the New York Time magazine.
Created and managed by Sankara Hotels and Resorts, the 156 room Sankara Nairobi represents a modern generation of urban hotels. Designed by Anil Badan of Studio B architects the hotel balances design with local influences creating a definitive “sense of place” that champions the new emerging Africa.
