October 25, 2010 – The New York Times Magazine cover story in March 2006 entitled, “Wanted: A Few Good Sperm,” followed actions by a number of then called “single mothers by choice” who were “tired of waiting for the right guy to come along” and instead were “just looking for the right sperm. These single Manhattan women had decided to conceive through sperm donors.

Sperm stories or sperm wars have time and again popped up in newspaper headlines worldwide. One of the famous ones read; Dad must pay for ‘secret sperm tot.’” , the story further read, “A Brooklyn man says his estranged wife forged his signature on a form to get his frozen sperm—and then used it to conceive his daughter.

The stories keep on popping up in many newsletters worldwide and we can say that much is attributed to a fertile male somewhere who gets caught in the mess by bad luck or who just didn’t cover his tracks well. These cases may change in the near future after researcher at the Loyola University Chicago School of Medicine found out that laptops could tip the scales to one side. Men are increasingly using laptops worldwide in schools, business, recreational facilities and on travel and his is affecting their sperm counts and or quality. “Laptops are becoming increasingly common among young men wired into to the latest technology,” said Suzanne Kavic, MD, director of the division of reproductive endocrinology at LUHS and associate professor in the department of obstetrics and gynecology and department of medicine at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. “

There is too much heat generated from these gadgets that affects sperm growth and maturity and that is where the problem lies. More controversy comes with even other toys as mobile phones being placed close to the reproductive organs with some authorities alluding to the fact that radiation seems to be coming from the electronic gadgets. Originally they may have been weapons of mass destruction, ask Bill Clinton about his reputation, these tiny warriors are under attack, from excessive heat, poor diets, obesity, drugs or a combination of all.

The sperm development and maturity takes several developmental steps and processes and one single missed step cold mean several things. The sperm may end up with two heads or tails, become too slow to just do anything, end up with no head ( the head carries the genetic material) or a combination of the above. The last and most crucial step in sperm development is when they end up in the testes for storage. They are mostly semi matured and require temperatures of at most 32 degrees centigrade to achieve maturity. When the heat is raised as seen in truck drivers, cyclists, boiler operators and now the urbanites who are quickly moving on the fast lane, problems will rise.

A normal sperm count in every ejaculate should number any where more than 20 Million per milliliter. Sixty percent of them should be able to reach the egg, 60 percent of them should be of normal shape and swim at grade 2 speed.

For good fertility every man should keep the laptop on the table, exercise daily, eat well, avoid hot baths, eat high vitamin diet such as vitamin B12, take in of zinc in diet and avoid drugs and excess alcohol intake.
