September 23, 2010 – Singer and actress Jennifer Lopez and Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler have been named as new judges on US talent show “American Idol,” seeking to revive ailing viewing figures.
The pair will join record producer Randy Jackson in a three-member panel on the still top-rated show, following the departure of talent show guru Simon Cowell along with judges Ellen DeGeneres and Kara DioGuardi.
“We’re incredibly excited to have Jennifer join the Fox family,” said Peter Rice, chairman of entertainment for Fox Networks Group.
“From the worlds of dance and music to television, films and fashion, she is a global superstar with iconic and captivating style, along with impressive insight on how to reach and move audiences worldwide.”
Lopez — a singer, actress and music producer known as J.Lo to her fans — said she was hoping to “find the new Michael Jackson” on “American Idol.”
Her deal with Fox includes a first-look film agreement for her production company.
“I am looking forward to working with the entire Fox team to create and produce the kinds of film and television projects that reflect my passion for entertaining audiences and telling great stories,” she said.
“American Idol,” which has seen its viewing figures dip this season and been thrown into disarray by the departure of Cowell, DeGeneres and DioGuardi, returns for a 10th season next January.
