'Toy Story 3' buzzes box office competition

June 28, 2010 – Record breaking “Toy Story 3” continued its extended playtime atop the North American box office with a 59-million-dollar take over the weekend, initial figures showed Sunday.

The movie from pioneering digital studio Pixar, which launched the first installment of the movie in 1995, comfortably held newcomer “Grown Ups” to second place.

The Adam Sandler and Chris Rock comedy about a reunion of high school friends, lampooned by critics as an infantile snooze-fest, took 41 million dollars in ticket receipts in its opening weekend.

Also making its opening was “Knight and Day,” an action comedy starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz that was praised for its viral marketing campaign. It gained the chart’s number three spot with 20.5 million dollars.

Last week’s number two “The Karate Kid” fell into fourth spot, meanwhile, with 15.4 million dollars, and in fifth was action comedy “The A-Team,” a remake of the classic 1980s television series about four rogue soldiers of fortune, accused of a crime they claim they didn’t commit.

The new-look “A-Team,” starring Liam Neeson, earned six million dollars in its third weekend.

Raunchy comedy “Get Him To The Greek” with British star Russell Brand as a heroin-addicted rocker being whisked from London to Los Angeles for a comeback gig netted the sixth spot with three million dollars in ticket sales.

“Shrek Forever After,” another installment in the apparently endless stream of movies about the green ogre, was bumped down to seventh place, with a 2.87-million-dollar weekend take. The early summer blockbuster has brought in a total of 229 million dollars over six weeks.

“Prince of Persia: the Sands of Time” with Jake Gyllenhaal was in the eighth spot with 2.8 million dollars, ahead of action comedy “Killers,” starring Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher, which brought in two million dollars in its fourth weekend.

Comic book adaptation “Jonah Hex” settled at 1.6 million dollars in its second weekend to round out the chart top 10.
