Remember Wyclef Jean? That short serious-looking Haitian man who was ‘Gone till November’? He’s going to be hosting the MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA) with Zain in Nairobi in October! Yeah Baby!
The musician, writer, Haitian, producer and Haitian prolific artistic will touch down in Nairobi on October 10.
Organisers said in a statement on Tuesday that they are counting on Wyclef’s ‘legendary showmanship, outrageous sense of humour and infinite enthusiasm’ to create a vibrate atmosphere at the Moi International Sports Complex Arena.
The cherry on the top of the event is that Wyclef will perform alongside Kenya’s Wahu, Nigeria’s M.I., South Africa’s Lira and Ghana’s Samini, who have been confirmed as performers at the awards ceremony.
Wyclef, like Wahu, (a little bit) has won and been nominated for multiple awards in his distinguished career including Grammys, MTV Video Music Awards, MTV Europe Music Awards, the BRITS and the BET Awards.
The MAMA was created last year to celebrate the best African contemporary music, and after the first round in Abuja, Nigeria, the second round will be in Kasarani, Nairobi on 10 October.
Meanwhile, three Kenyan musicians ‘have earned a chance at musical immortality by getting to the final of the My Video contest organised by MTV base and Zain as part of October’s awards’.
Julia Mumbi Thaitai, Anthony Mwangi and Robert Rajoro all qualified as finalists in the pan-African talent search which challenged amateur musicians to show off their hidden singing skills. The trio of Kenyan artists made the finals after submitting short video clips of themselves to the MTV judges at Zain centres around the country and at special My Video events.
The three young singers now stand a chance of winning their very own ‘MAMA’ trophy.
