The Rata Project is a new production lead by 3 passionate individuals.

The passion project that started in August 2016, now celebrates one year since it became a reality. Conceived by Fred Makofu an I.T Engineer, Leon Kinuthia an online entrepreneur and Mungai a freelance writer, the project was thought of as a creative outlet until it took a life of its own.  The objective of the project has now been redefined to spotlight Kenya’s young artists who may not benefit from great exposure or radio play. A celebration of Kenyan talent, the project only features original music differentiating themselves from similar productions in Kenya.

Started by Fred, Leon, and Mungai, the Rata Project has featured an eclectic mix of talented artists including Kaskazini, Ciano Maimba, Wanja Wohoro and even spoken word artist Jaazia Shiraz. In a conversation with Capital Campus, Mungai shared the labor of love has had its share of obstacles. With a limited budget, the trio began the passion project recording sessions in the living room of one of its members and in a year has grown to other spaces.

Their love for music is evident with Fred and Leon formerly members of the band “Wild Apple” and it translates to their production of the Rata Project. Now working to released 4 videos per month, the trio juggle their desk jobs while having their creativity flourish with the Rata Project. When asked who they hope to feature on their project, Mungai was quick to say “Taboo”  crooner Phy and the phenomenal Fena.

For now, the trio is focused on producing more musical content and expanding their content to include Kenya’s spoken word artists.
