A university student arrested on Monday for allegedly raping a 2nd female student has been released on Sh100,000 cash bail after being arraigned in court before Nairobi Resident Magistrate Miriam Mugere. David Ochieng has been accused of dragging and raping a woman at his hostel room on 2nd August 2014.
Police say they have gathered medical reports as proof of evidence and are ready to proceed with the case. Sources say the lady is being treated at a hospital in Nairobi.
Ochieng pleaded not guilty against the rape charges against him and also maliciously damaging property. Students who didn’t want to be named said several cases of rape have been reported at the university but the authorities have not taken action.
A reliable source hinted the accused is a personal assistant to the Students Organization of Nairobi (SONU) chairman Babu Owini. The SONU chairman had earlier last week said in a facebook post that female students from the University should stop wearing revealing clothes that tempt male students. He further warned female students not to ‘walk at night, otherwise they will be raped with contempt.”
Relatives and friends of the accused have also been warned by the court not to intimidate witnesses as there are reports of intimidation at Central Police station.
The case will come up for mention on the 19th August but hearing will be on the 4th of September.
