University of Nairobi maintains high international ranking despite a chaotic year


The University of Nairobi has maintained its lead position in Kenya and East Africa as the best university according to the just-released webometrics January 2018 edition.

The University emerged 7th best in Africa and 874 globally out of an average of 12,000 Universities that have been ranked. The University of Capetown, Witwatersrand and Stellenbosch University were ranked position 1, 2 and 3 in Africa. Makerere University takes the 2nd position in East Africa followed by Egerton and Kenyatta University respectively.

In the parameters used to achieve the ranking, University of Nairobi’s Presence was ranked position 4, Impact 726, Openness 985 and excellence 1535 globally. The University has recorded an improvement in presence and impact parameters from the January 2017 edition. At present, the University moved from position 11 to 4, Impact from position 785 to 726.

According to webometrics, presence is the number of pages of the main web domain of the institution; Visibility or Impact is the number of external networks originating backlinks to the institutions webpages, Transparency or openness is the number of citations from top authors according to the source, Excellence is the number of papers amongst the top 10% most cited among 26 disciplines data for five year period.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi has commended the University staff for their hard work as the institution is committed to its vision of ‘a world-class university committed to scholarly excellence.’
