A court in Uganda has sentenced a teenage girl to a six-hour jail term for killing her rapist father. 18 year old Afuwah Namata killed her father on May 8th after he raped her repeatedly. The 58 year old father had been raping the girl for five years. Masaka High Court judge Margaret Oumo sentenced the girl in what the African Spotlight says “is probably one of the most unusual sentences heard in the country.”

The prosecution had asked for the maximum punishment for the girl arguing the 18-yr old would have reported the situation to the police instead of hacking her dad with a panga.

The defense said the father had been raping the girl and her two elder sisters, impregnating the three in the process. Defense lawyer Edward Kikirengoma said Afuwah is six months pregnant from her father’s “intimate harassment”.

Judge Oumo sentenced Afuwah to six hours from the time of the ruling (11am) to 5pm.
