Mombasa Technical University has been closed indefinitely after students went on the rampage to protest increased fees.
The closure order was announced by Vice Chancellor, Josphat Mwatela, after the students blocked roads and burnt vehicles in Tudor area.
The students paralysed transport on roads around the university from 7am, after barricading roads, causing a huge traffic snarl up. Several Technical University of Mombasa students have been arrested and will be charged with causing disturbance and destruction of property.
The students burnt down two Mombasa County government garbage trucks and further destroyed property of unknown value.
The students have accused the management of increasing school fees by between Sh3, 000 and Sh8, 000 this semester.
The institutions Vice Chancellor Joseph Mwatelah has since ordered the indefinite closure of the institution.
Mombasa OCPD Martin Asin called on the students to maintain calm as an amicable solution is being sought to resolve their grievances.
Asin adds that police officers have been deployed to monitor the situation and protect looting and further destruction of property.
