Strathmore reach rugby cup final to face Nakuru

Strathmore Leos
Strathmore Leos

Strathmore University rugby has for the first time reached the finals of the Kenya cup after overcoming Mwamba RFC 18-15 in a bruising semi-final. Leos will meet Nakuru RFC in a season that has produced unlikely finalists. It will be the first final in a long time without rugby power-houses of the Ngong road neighbours; Harlequins and Impala RFC’s. Nakuru saw off KCB 21 -7 at the Nakuru Athletics Club grounds.

Strathmore will be seeking to be the only second Varsity side to lift the Kenya Cup. UoN’s Mean Machine has won the cup four times, but they have recently fallen out of the top clubs with the last Kenya cup title won in 1990.

Strathmore rallied from behind after Lavin Asego put Mwamba ahead with a drop goal. Leos’ Billy Odhiambo try and Githaiga’s conversion saw Strath take a 7-3 lead. Marvin Sumba added a penalty putting the Leos 10-3 up before Joseph Oriwo’s try and Jei Tuni’s conversion leveled the scores at 10-10 going into half time.

Second half action saw Adrian Opondo touchdown for Strathmore and Githaiga added a penalty, stretching lead to 18 -1. A fast and disciplined strategy by Leos kept Mwamba forwards from controlling the game. Patrick Oduong’s unconverted try for Mwamba was too little too late as the students held on for the win. The finals will be played at Kasarani Sports centre on 23rd February.

In the Chairman’s cup, where most Universities and Colleges play, CUEA will meet Daystar in the final.
