South African wins Miss World, Kenyan (not Ugandan) in the top 10

South African Rolene Strauss has been crowned Miss World 2014. The 22-year-old eclipsed over 120 contestants from all over the world to be announced the winner of the 64th edition of Miss World.

Miss Kenya Idah Nguma came in at number seven alongside beauty queens from Hungary (2nd), US (3rd) and; England, Guyana, Brazil, Mexico and Australia.

Ugandan media had earlier reported that Miss Uganda (Leah Kelanguka) was one of the favorites to win the title based on a ranking by Daily Mail.

Idah was also named among the winners in the ‘Beauty with a Purpose’ section alongside Miss Brazil, Guyana, India and Indonesia. The judges saw the community projects the beauty queens were involved in as outstanding.

Rolene Strauss, who is a medical student in South Africa, dedicated her win to her country.

“I am what I am today because of the opportunities I have received and I would love to give other the same opportunities; educating, the opportunity to be educated, to make healthy choices and also live their dreams,” Strauss told AFP.
