Traders hurriedly closed down shops in Nairobi’s Central Business District on Tuesday as university students poured into the capital’s streets to protest over a controversial fee hike.

The students from various campuses took to the streets but remained largely peaceful until when they insisted to storm Jogoo house.

There were various groups demonstrating towards Jogoo House where the students intend to hand over a petition to Education Cabinet Secretary Professor Jacob Kaimenyi. Anti Riot police pushed the groups back towards Uchumi house

One of the groups matched from Uhuru Highway through Parliament road, another along Moi Avenue while others from Technical University of Kenya are demonstrating on Haile Sellasie Avenue.

Nairobi police chief Benson Kibui has told Capital FM News that anti-riot police officers are prepared to deal with the demonstrators in case they turn rowdy.

Regular police and GSU have stormed University of Nairobi main campus and have arrested over 300 students. Our correspondent on the ground reports the police are indiscriminate and have detained several lecturers and university staff.
