Oscar Pistorius, the 27-year-old Olympian accused of murdering his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day last year, posted a series of Twitter Inc. messages quoting the Bible and illustrating his work with disabled children.

In one of three postings yesterday on his verified account, his first since the anniversary of the shooting on Feb. 14, Pistorius quoted Psalm 34:18, saying: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted.” The South African athlete also posted a picture montage of him with a number of children around a passage that began: “You have the ability to make a difference in someone’s life.”

Pistorius, the first double amputee to compete at the Olympic Games, has pleaded not guilty to the charge of murder and says he thought his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp was an intruder when he fired four shots through a toilet cubicle door at his home. The 39-day trial, heard in Pretoria, is adjourned until Aug. 7, when the prosecution and defense will start making the oral closing arguments.

The third post yesterday was an excerpt from “Man’s Search for Meaning,” a Holocaust memoir by Viktor Frankl. Today Pistorius posted a prayer to his 353,000 followers. “Lord, today I ask that you bathe those who live in pain in the river of your healing,” it read.
