My Little Big Thing Sustainability Challenge Open To Submissions


MK-Africa, a leading marketing, and sustainability consultancy launched the ‘My Little Big Thing’ on the 10th of May 2017. The Universities Sustainability Innovation Challenge in collaboration with KPMG Kenya and the Cambridge University Sustainability Leadership Institute in South Africa.


Targeting undergraduate students drawn from universities and polytechnics around Kenya, the campaign which is inspired by Nobel Laureate’s Wangari Maathai’s ‘little thing’ of planting trees, aims to inspire young people to come up with sustainability ideas that are commercially viable.


Speaking during the launch of the awards, Professor Richard Calland, a fellow of the Cambridge University Institute of Sustainability Leadership, South Africa (CISL SA) said, ‘The Sustainable Development Goals are a huge opportunity to decide if we get the Africa we are going to get or the Africa we want.  Business and the SDGs have a huge role to play in this in terms of guiding principles.’

Also speaking at the launch, MK-Africa’s CEO, Muthoni Kanyana stated, “The success of this competition will be in providing a platform for new innovation in business and sustainability centered around the Sustainable Development Goals.  The winners of this competition will benefit from great rewards which include a comprehensive business and sustainability training by KPMG and Cambridge University’s Sustainability Institute in South Africa.”


The competition calls for university students across Kenya to send through their sustainability business ideas via the competition website.  The selection of winners will be done by KPMG Kenya with the best 15 entries being selected to participate in a business skills training program by KPMG.  They will then be required to pitch their business ideas to a panel of experts who will select the final seven (7) from whom three (3) of the best will be selected by the public through an online voting process.  The final three (3) winners will attend a 3-day sustainability practitioners program by the University of Cambridge Sustainability Leadership Institute in South Africa, visit sustainability-centered companies in South Africa such P&G and South Africa airways as well as tour Johannesburg before returning to Kenya for 3-months paid internship at top companies in the country.


Ms. Kanyana further said, “Apart from offering an attractive package to the winners, the ideas will be reviewed and supported through company internships to pave way for implementation.” MK-Africa is keen on long-term and sustainable projects that improve livelihoods and is committed to creating an African narrative for sustainability. She also thanked all the sponsors, advisors and all other stakeholders who had worked tirelessly towards making the launch a success.  She recognized the overwhelming support MK-Africa received from the company’s partners – KPMG & Cambridge as a testament of the confidence in MK-Africa’s program initiatives.
