Unilever East Africa has announced this year’s Idea Trophy, an inter-university innovation competition that focuses on the development of personal and entrepreneurial business competencies amongst Kenyan undergraduates.
The contest, now in its fourth year, has been open to students from Kenyan public and private universities who are required to generate innovative ideas on creating brand awareness and growing product usage among their peers in the target institutions. This year’s competition will see the winning University battle it out with other African countries so as to represent the continent at a global stage.
Marc Engel, Unilever CEO for East Africa, called on students to apply in large numbers sighting that the skills acquired will fundamentally benefit them in their future endeavors. He added that this year Idea Trophy had been designed to improve youth employability across Africa by providing students with a unique opportunity to work on business challenges and get access to Unilever’s world-class training.
Participants will have a life-time experience working on real business challenges in a multinational company as well as gain mentorship from experienced business leaders. They will also work with creative agencies to bring their ideas to life besides gaining access to a resource toolkit and problem-solving frameworks.
Last year’s edition was won by a team of three students from University of Eldoret.
“Unilever is committed towards investing in Kenya’s young bright minds who are also the future leaders, employers and entrepreneurs of this economic hub of East Africa. At Unilever we work to create a brighter future every day for all, and increasing our positive social impact is key towards this mission,” said Mr Engel.
Participants stand the chance to win a trip to the Global Future Leader’s League at one of Unilever’s international hubs plus a highly sought-after internship at the firm which was voted as the number one FMCG Employer of choice among students.
The Idea Trophy competition was first launched in the year 2012 and has continued to generate interest among the student communities. The initiative has also contributed immensely towards students-personal development and has offered them a different perspective and experience in readiness to business life gained through working with a global organization – Unilever.
