Cambridge students were left bewildered during a university exam when they came across a question which asked them to analyse a poem, written by Koos Kombuis, which featured only punctuation and no words.

One student said of the puzzling request: “I went in feeling confident and panicked. I thought it was a printing mistake. I’m concerned about my 2:1.”

Kombuis, from Cape Town in South Africa, wrote the poem as a protest against apartheid censorship laws.

He told the Metro newspaper: “Where the people at Cambridge got hold of it is anyone’s guess.”
